XRandR 1.2 will do wonders for multi-head Linux, and allow you to hook up a projector to your laptop and use it as a display without restarting X. Its already out and distributions are starting to use it. Gutsy Ubuntu has support for it, and even has a tool to let you add and remove the second monitor, though it is currently heavily reliant on driver support.
